Porsche 912

On the Peking to Paris rally in 2010, I met a young man called Hayden Burvill who helped me with my Alfa Romeo 6C when it was giving me problems, and he and I got on well. He convinced me I should become a Porsche owner having always derided them as having their engine in the wrong place, although I knew really they did make historic rally cars. The upshot was that I ended up buying the 912 which is a 4 cylinder 911 (the poor man’s model) to do the London to Cape Town in January 2012.

Sadly the organisers chose to do a map reading exercise in the early hours of the morning that eliminated the serious long distance cars, so the competitive rally was over before Dover.

The rally was incredibly arduous, fast-paced with no rest days and the car gave a lot of trouble, but we still managed to finish 5th overall and win our class.

Car early on, looking positive.

This is not as callous as it looks as the Volvo has an “OK” sing at the rear showing that he’s alright.
